Rakautara Native bush
The restoration of people and the land is at the heart of what we do and the restoration of 402 acres of coastal property in the Kaikoura region is a triumph in native bush restoration.
Originally a sheep farm we purchased the property in 1996 and converted it to a light grazing cattle farm.
Through careful management of the property we have seen a dramatic increase in native plant density with many species thriving.
In 2019 Wai-ora was approached by a group to consider a proposal to convert the property into a model native oasis.
This would be used as an example of how native bush, eco-tourism and community camping could co-exist. Discussions continue but regardless, the revegetation of the Rakautara bush is dramatic.
