Description

Veronica strictissima is a bushy shrub endemic to Banks Peninsula.  As its range is limited, Veronica strictissima is naturally uncommon and rated to be At Risk under the Department of Conservation’s Threat Classification System since 2009. V. strictissima has been found to grow at an altitude of around 500m ASL and is distributed from the coast to this height on Banks Peninsula. One other Veronica (Hebe lavaudiana) and one herb species (Celmisia mackaui) are unique to Banks Peninsula, which has different climatic conditions to the rest of the Canterbury area. Grows mostly in open areas on banks and bluffs, or in scrub.

The genus Veronica are fast growing and thrive in sunny open areas, such as scrubland, steep banks and bluffs. Veronicas require very little care. Avoid feeding them as this can make them grow too quickly and develop floppy leaves. Cut back dead flowers and up to a third of foliage in late summer, after flowering, to encourage strong new growth and a good bushy shape. Annual pruning will extend the life of your shrub, too. Hard pruning can rejuvenate an old plant and give it an extra lease of life.

Veronica strictissima is native to scrubland and tough. They’re tolerant of salt and can therefore grow in coastal situations. Tolerant of poor soils so will grow virtually anywhere. It is not very tolerant of shade. A ruderal species as they respond well to disturbances. Similar to Veronica traversii, found in northern Canterbury.

Tolerant of coastal conditions. Trim after flowering. Frost Hardy.
